Product Information
Who This Unit Is For
The 18 TruComfort™ Variable Speed Air Conditioner gives you most of the Premier variable-speed feel without stepping up to the 20 TruComfort™ with WeatherGuard™. This model used to be called the Trane XV18.
This is the model we’d talk about when someone likes the idea of the 20 TruComfort™ with WeatherGuard™, but wants to bring the price down.
A Trane 18 TruComfort™ can make sense if you care about humidity control, quieter operation, longer runtimes, and fewer temperature swings.
It’s probably the wrong fit if you just need a basic replacement and want to keep the price low. It’s also not the right unit if you want to use a simple thermostat or mix it with just any indoor equipment.
What you’re really buying here is most of the Premier-level Trane experience at a lower price than the 20 TruComfort™ with WeatherGuard™.
Key Features
- Energy Efficiency: Up to 18.1 SEER2
- Noise Level: 67–76 dB
- Speeds: Variable
- Fan Stages: Variable
- Trane Link Control Board
- Liquid-cooled Inverter Drive
- Swept Fan Blade

Benefits
- Variable-speed cooling at a lower price than the 20 TruComfort™ with WeatherGuard™
- Excellent humidity control compared to single-stage and multi-speed systems
- Longer, quieter runtimes
- Good fit for homeowners who want Premier-level cooling without choosing the top model
- Uses Trane’s Spine Fin™ coil and Climatuff™ compressor
Considerations
- Still a premium-price air conditioner
- Does not include WeatherGuard™ Top
- Requires compatible Trane communicating indoor equipment
- Not as efficient as the 20 TruComfort™ with WeatherGuard™
- Service techs need the right training for communicating systems
What Our Service Department Says
The 18 TruComfort™ is the one we’d look at when someone wants the feel of a high-end Trane system but does not necessarily need the top model.
The tradeoff is that this is not a simple swap-in A/C. It needs the right indoor equipment and the right controls.
We also wouldn’t sell this as a cure-all for bad ductwork. A variable-speed system can help a lot, but it still needs good airflow.
Pricing
Our average price for selling and installing a Trane 18 TruComfort™ Variable Speed Air Conditioner is between $9,300 to $12,300.
Smaller units with easier installations are usually closer to the lower end. Larger units or tougher install projects with electrical, ductwork, or access issues may end up near the higher end.
The main comparison is usually between the 18 TruComfort™ and the Trane 20 TruComfort™ Variable Speed Air Conditioner with WeatherGuard™. The 20 TruComfort™ with WeatherGuard™ is the more complete top-of-the-line option.

Compatible Furnaces
The 18 TruComfort™ Variable Speed Air Conditioner needs compatible Trane communicating indoor equipment. This is not the type of A/C we’d normally pair with a basic single-stage furnace and a standard thermostat.
We often recommend this system with a compatible Trane communicating air handler or gas furnace, such as the Trane TAMX Hyperion Air Handler or the Trane XC95m Gas Furnace.
Warranty
- 12-year limited warranty on compressor
- 10-year limited warranty on coil and other functional parts
Installation
With the 18 TruComfort™, the installation has to be treated like a full system design, not just an outdoor unit replacement.
If the 18 TruComfort™ makes sense, we’ll explain why. If the 20 TruComfort™ with WeatherGuard™ is worth the upgrade, we’ll walk through that too.
