Product Information
Who This Unit Is For
If you want a single-stage heat pump but like the added protection of WeatherGuard™, this is the Choice model to look at. This model used to be called the Trane XL16i.
This is the protected version of Trane’s 16 Single-Stage Heat Pump. It still runs like a single-stage system, but it adds the WeatherGuard™ Top for extra protection from rain, snow, leaves, and debris.
A 16 Single-Stage heat pump can make sense if you want a dependable year-round system, but you don’t want the added cost and complexity of a higher-end model.
It’s probably the wrong fit if your main complaints are humidity, uneven rooms, or weak heating in certain parts of the house. A single-stage heat pump still runs at one speed, so sizing and airflow matter a lot.
What you’re really buying here is simple heating and cooling with R-454B refrigerant, Trane’s Spine Fin™ coil, and a Climatuff™ compressor.
Key Features
- Energy Efficiency: Up to 17 SEER2 / 8.5 HSPF2
- Heating and Cooling Stages: Single-Stage
- Next-generation R-454B refrigerant
- Lower Global Warming Potential (GWP)
- Durable polycarbonate WeatherGuard™ Top
- Climatuff™ Compressor
- Spine Fin™ Coil
- DuraTuff™ non-corrosive basepan
Benefits
- Adds WeatherGuard™ protection to Trane’s 16 Single-Stage Heat Pump
- Simple single-stage heating and cooling
- 12-year limited warranty on the compressor
- Can work well in practical dual-fuel setups
- Uses Trane’s Spine Fin™ coil and Climatuff™ compressor
Considerations
- Costs more than the standard 16 Single-Stage Heat Pump
- Still runs like a single-stage system
- Does not offer the control of a multi-speed or variable-speed heat pump
- WeatherGuard™ protects the top of the unit, but it does not fix airflow, sizing, or ductwork problems
- May not be the best fit if you’re trying to solve uneven rooms, humidity, or weak airflow
What Our Service Department Says
The WeatherGuard™ Top is nice when the unit is sitting in a rougher spot. If the heat pump is under trees, close to landscaping, or somewhere that catches a lot of debris, the protected top gives you a little more peace of mind.
That means we still care a lot about sizing and airflow. If the unit is too big or the ductwork is weak, the higher efficiency rating won’t matter much.
Get the basics right, and this can be a really solid heat pump. Get the basics wrong, and the model number won’t save it.
Pricing
Our average price for selling and installing a Trane 16 Single-Stage Heat Pump with WeatherGuard™ is between $7,600 to $9,900. This price includes installation and a matching indoor coil.
Smaller units with easy installations are usually closer to the lower end. Larger units or harder install projects with electrical, ductwork, or access issues may end up near the higher end.
The big question is whether the WeatherGuard™ version is worth paying more for. If your outdoor unit is tucked away in a clean, open area, the standard Trane 16 Single-Stage Heat Pump may be enough.

Compatible Furnaces
The 16 Single-Stage Heat Pump pairs well with practical indoor equipment. We often match this heat pump with a capable air handler or a gas furnace in a dual-fuel setup.
That type of pairing keeps the system practical. You’re buying better heat pump efficiency here, but you’re not building a premium communicating system.
Warranty
- 12-year limited warranty on compressor
- 10-year limited warranty on coil and other functional parts
Installation
With a 16 Single-Stage Heat Pump, the installation needs to match the reason you’re buying it. If you’re paying more for efficiency, the system needs the right airflow, charge, and sizing to actually perform the way it should.
During the estimate, we’ll look at the current system, ductwork, equipment location, and comfort issues before recommending this model.
