Product Information

Who This Unit Is For

The 17 Multi-Speed Heat Pump with WeatherGuard™ sits between a basic single-stage heat pump and Trane’s Premier communicating systems. This model used to be called the Trane XL17i.

This is the protected version of Trane’s 17 Multi-Speed Heat Pump. You’re getting the better heating and cooling control of a multi-speed system, plus the WeatherGuard™ Top and a 12-year limited warranty on the compressor.

With the 17 Multi-Speed, Trane changed more than just the name. The older version used R-410A refrigerant and a two-stage scroll compressor. The current 17 Multi-Speed uses R-454B refrigerant and an inverter-driven compressor that can run in multiple speeds depending on the size and demand.

That matters because this system sits in a really useful spot. It is not fully variable like the 20 TruComfort™ with WeatherGuard™, but it gives you a lot of the real-world benefit without requiring the most expensive Premier setup.

A 17 Multi-Speed with WeatherGuard™ can make sense if you want better year-round comfort than a single-stage heat pump, but your outdoor unit also sits in a spot where extra protection is worth paying for.

Key Features

  • Energy Efficiency: Up to 18 SEER2 / 11 HSPF2
  • Noise Level: 63–75 dB
  • Heating and Cooling Stages: Multiple
  • Inverter-driven compressor
  • WeatherGuard™ Top
  • Swept Fan Blade
  • Spine Fin™ Coil
  • Demand Defrost for Coil
  • Climatuff™ Compressor

Benefits

  • Better humidity control than basic single-stage heat pumps
  • More heating and cooling control without Premier communicating equipment
  • WeatherGuard™ Top adds outdoor protection
  • 12-year limited warranty on the compressor
  • Good fit for homeowners who want advanced performance without going to the top of the lineup

Considerations

  • Costs more than the standard 17 Multi-Speed Heat Pump
  • Still not as smooth or quiet as Trane’s Premier TruComfort™ systems
  • May be more system than you need for a smaller home
  • WeatherGuard™ does not fix ductwork, sizing, or airflow problems
  • Not the best choice if price is the main concern

What Our Service Department Says

This is one of those models where we’d want to know why you’re stepping up. If you’re stepping up because the old heat pump kept the house mostly comfortable but felt loud, uneven, or inefficient, the 17 Multi-Speed makes sense to talk about.

We also like the current 17 Multi-Speed design better than the older two-stage version. The newer inverter-driven setup gives the system more ways to run, which is the whole point of looking at this tier.

The WeatherGuard™ Top is the other piece. If the unit is sitting under trees or in a spot that catches debris, it can be worth having. But it’s not a substitute for a good install.

Pricing

Our average price for selling and installing a Trane 17 Multi-Speed Heat Pump with WeatherGuard™ is between $8,900 to $11,400. This price includes installation and a matching indoor coil.

Smaller units with easier installations are usually closer to the lower end. Larger units or tougher install projects with electrical, ductwork, or access issues may end up near the higher end.

The big question is whether you need the WeatherGuard™ version. If the outdoor unit sits in a clean, open area, the standard Trane 17 Multi-Speed Heat Pump may be enough.

Compatible Furnaces

The 17 Multi-Speed Heat Pump with WeatherGuard™ should be matched with indoor equipment that helps the system do what you’re buying it for.

For many homes, we may recommend the Trane 5TEM6 Air Handler or the Trane S9V2 Gas Furnace. A variable-speed blower can help the indoor side support the outdoor unit instead of holding it back.

Warranty

  • 12-year limited warranty on compressor
  • 10-year limited warranty on coil and other functional parts

Installation

With this model, we’re looking at both the house and the outdoor location. Inside, we want to know if you’re dealing with humidity, uneven rooms, short run times, or heating complaints.

Sometimes this is the right middle-ground upgrade. Sometimes the standard 17 Multi-Speed is enough. And sometimes, if you’re chasing the quietest or smoothest heating and cooling possible, it makes more sense to look at the 18 TruComfort™ or 20 TruComfort™ before deciding.
