Product Information

Who This Unit Is For

The Trane 16 Single-Stage Air Conditioner is for homeowners who want strong efficiency, but still want to keep the system simple. This model used to be called the Trane XR16.

This is the highest-efficiency single-stage A/C in Trane’s current lineup without adding the WeatherGuard™ Top. So you’re getting a nice jump in efficiency from the 13 and 14 models, but you’re not moving into a multi-stage or variable-speed system.

A Trane 16 Single-Stage can make sense if you plan to stay in your home for a while and want something better than the basic budget models. It’s also a good fit if you like the idea of a simpler A/C without the extra controls and parts that come with the premium systems.

Where we’d pause is if comfort matters more than efficiency. If your home has humidity problems, loud temperature swings, or an upstairs that never feels right, this unit may not be the answer by itself. It’s efficient for a single-stage A/C, but it still runs at one speed.

What you’re really buying here is better efficiency in a simpler package. You get Trane’s Spine Fin™ coil and Climatuff™ compressor, but you’re not paying for the quietest cabinet, the WeatherGuard™ Top, or the longer low-speed runtimes you’d get from Trane’s higher-end systems.

Key Features

  • Energy Efficiency: Up to 17 SEER2
  • Cooling Stages: Single-Stage
  • R-454B Refrigerant
  • Lower Global Warming Potential
  • Climatuff™ compressor + Spine Fin™ condenser coil
  • Upgraded fan motor
  • Full-sided galvanized steel louvered panels
  • DuraTuff™ rust-proof basepan

Benefits

  • Strong efficiency in a simple single-stage package
  • Simple single-stage cooling
  • Good fit for homeowners who want efficiency without premium controls
  • Uses Trane’s Spine Fin™ coil and Climatuff™ compressor
  • R-454B refrigerant

Considerations

  • Still not as smooth as a multi-speed or variable-speed system
  • Still runs like a single-stage system
  • Less humidity control than Trane’s higher-end air conditioners
  • WeatherGuard™ Top is not included
  • May not be enough if your home has major airflow or comfort issues

What Our Service Department Says

Don’t buy this one thinking it turns a single-stage system into a premium cooling system. It doesn’t. It’s a more efficient single-stage A/C, but it still turns on, runs at full capacity, and shuts off.

That means we still care a lot about sizing and airflow. If the unit is too big or the ductwork is weak, the higher efficiency rating won’t matter much.

Get the basics right, and this can be a really solid A/C. Get the basics wrong, and the model number won’t save it.

Pricing

Our average price for selling and installing a Trane 16 Single-Stage Air Conditioner is between $7,400 to $9,700.

Smaller units with easier installations are usually closer to the lower end. Larger units or tougher install projects with electrical, ductwork, or access issues may end up near the higher end.

If you just want a basic A/C at a lower price, the Trane 14 Single-Stage Air Conditioner may be enough. If you care more about humidity control and longer run times, compare this against the Trane 17 Multi-Speed Air Conditioner.

Compatible Furnaces

The 16 Single-Stage Air Conditioner pairs well with practical indoor equipment. We often match this A/C with a simple furnace or air handler.

That type of pairing keeps the system practical. You’re buying better A/C efficiency here, but you’re not building a premium communicating system.

Warranty

  • 10-year limited warranty on coil and other functional parts

Installation

With the 16 Single-Stage A/C, the installation needs to match the reason you’re buying it. If you’re paying more for efficiency, the system needs the right airflow, charge, and sizing to actually perform the way it should.

During the estimate, we’ll look at the current system, ductwork, equipment location, and comfort issues before recommending this model.
