Product Information

Who This Unit Is For

The 17 Multi-Speed Air Conditioner with WeatherGuard™ is the protected version of Trane’s Priority multi-speed A/C. This model used to be called the Trane XL17i.

This is the protected version of Trane’s 17 Multi-Speed Air Conditioner. You’re getting better cooling control than a single-stage system, plus the WeatherGuard™ Top.

With the 17 Multi-Speed, Trane changed more than just the name. The older version used R-410A refrigerant and a two-step scroll compressor, and that version had a rough history with noise complaints. The current 17 Multi-Speed uses R-454B refrigerant and an inverter-driven compressor.

A 17 Multi-Speed can be a good fit if you plan to stay in your home for a while and want something nicer than a basic replacement.

What you’re really buying here is a stronger middle option: better cooling behavior than the single-stage units, plus a tougher outdoor setup.

Key Features

  • Energy Efficiency: Up to 18 SEER2
  • Noise Level: 72–74 dB
  • Speeds: Multi-Speed
  • Fan Stages: Multiple
  • Inverter-driven compressor
  • WeatherGuard™ Top
  • Swept Fan Blade
  • Spine Fin™ Coil
  • Climatuff™ Compressor

Benefits

  • Better humidity control than basic single-stage air conditioners
  • Runs in lower speeds when full cooling is not needed
  • Good fit for homeowners who want advanced cooling without Premier pricing
  • WeatherGuard™ Top adds outdoor protection
  • Uses Trane’s Spine Fin™ coil and Climatuff™ compressor

Considerations

  • Costs more than the standard 17 Multi-Speed Air Conditioner
  • Not as quiet or smooth as the 18 TruComfort™ or 20 TruComfort™
  • May be more system than you need for a smaller home
  • Still needs proper sizing and airflow to do its job well
  • Not the best choice if price is the main concern

What Our Service Department Says

This is the point in the lineup where we’d start asking more questions about how the house actually feels. Not just “does it get cold?” but does the upstairs cool down, does the house feel sticky, and does the old A/C short-cycle all day?

The 17 Multi-Speed gives the system more ways to run, which is the whole reason to look at it. We also like that this current version got away from the older two-step compressor that caused more noise complaints than we liked.

The WeatherGuard™ Top is the other piece. If the unit is sitting under trees or in a spot that catches debris, it can be worth having.

Pricing

Our average price for selling and installing a Trane 17 Multi-Speed Air Conditioner with WeatherGuard™ is between $7,900 to $10,400.

Smaller units with easier installations are usually closer to the lower end. Larger units or tougher install projects with electrical, ductwork, or access issues may end up near the higher end.

The big question is whether you need the WeatherGuard™ version. If the outdoor unit sits in a clean, open area, the standard Trane 17 Multi-Speed Air Conditioner may be enough.

Compatible Furnaces

The 17 Multi-Speed Air Conditioner should be paired with indoor equipment that can support the reason you’re buying it.

We may recommend a more capable indoor option than we would with a basic single-stage A/C, depending on your home, ductwork, and comfort goals.

Warranty

  • 12-year limited warranty on compressor
  • 10-year limited warranty on coil and other functional parts

Installation

With the 17 Multi-Speed, the estimate should be about more than replacing the old box outside. We want to know what you’re hoping the new system fixes.

Sometimes this model is the right step up. Sometimes a single-stage A/C is enough. And sometimes the home needs a bigger airflow or humidity conversation before any A/C model will solve the problem.
