Who This Unit Is For

Trane’s 17 Multi-Speed Air Conditioner is where the cooling lineup starts to feel meaningfully different from the single-stage models. This model used to be called the Trane XR17.

This is where the lineup starts to feel different. A single-stage A/C is either on or off. The 17 Multi-Speed has more room to adjust, so it can run in lower speeds when the house does not need full-blast cooling.

With the 17 Multi-Speed, Trane changed more than just the name. The older version used R-410A refrigerant and a two-step scroll compressor, and that version had a rough history with noise complaints. The current 17 Multi-Speed uses R-454B refrigerant and an inverter-driven compressor.

A 17 Multi-Speed can be a good fit if you plan to stay in your home for a while and want something nicer than a basic replacement.

What you’re really buying here is more advanced cooling behavior at a mid-range price.

It still has to be set up right. If the ductwork is weak or the system is oversized, you can still end up disappointed.
