HVAC services have been the family trade for three generations – Dave Watkins (grandpa) served in the Air National Guard, where he was trained in HVAC and eventually started a commercial company with his three sons.
Randy and his son David shifted their focus toward bringing incredible HVAC service to families and homeowners, and in 2001, Watkins Heating & Cooling moved into our Dayton, OH location. a Dayton Customer Story: New Ductwork & HVAC System
The PROBLEM: Here's one of our favorite stories from a recent job we did in the Dayton, OH area! This customer's three-story Dayton home had serious temperature issues with hot and cold spots throughout the house. They were operating on an exceedingly old oil furnace and A/C that were struggling to keep the three floors of their home warm in the winter or cool in the summer. On top of the failing HVAC system, the ductwork in this house had been poorly sized and constructed, causing numerous issues.
The PROCESS: This customer had an out-of-date AC and Rheem oil-fired furance and they were set on moving to an entirely electric system for the convenience and energy efficiency. They initially decided to go with a different HVAC contractor who claimed to have all the answers. But when that other company showed up to install the new system, they couldn't figure out how to make it work with the layout and told the customer there was nothing they could do.
The SOLUTION: Left in a lurch by the other HVAC contractor, this customer reached back out to us at Watkins. Our experts quickly did an assessment of their home and put their heads together to find a solution. Our team walked the customer through how we could do the job and the major changes that would need to be made to the ductwork. We also gave them an aray of options and quotes for a new electric furnace and heat pump installation. They took what we said, shopped around, and concluded that we had the best plan and price for the job!
The RESULT: A team of Watkins technicians went hard to work drawing up a plan to re-size and re-run the poorly constructed ductwork and replace their outdated furnace and AC. After some major, innovative reworking of the duct system and installing a new high-efficiency electric furnace and heat pump, this customer's system now runs perfectly.
Our comfort specialists set them up with a brand new Trane XR14 heat pump and TAM9 electric air handler (electric furnace). This replacement moved them from old, energy-hogging equipment to a new system with impressive energy efficiency of 14.8 SEER2 cooling efficiency and 7.8 HSPF2 heating efficiency. This will instantly save them money on their energy bill. To help their budget even more, we scored them a $500 discount on their new equipment and helped them secure payments under $100 per month for their completely new HVAC system.
During our recent check-in, the customer told us that they were ecstatic with how their new system has even temperature flowing through every floor of their house. Our AC system was not originally setup correctly and Ryan went thru everything and got it up to spec. Very knowledgeable and explained everything in detail. I am very impressed with Watkins.

We told Jim we were looking for a new unit to replace our old one in a house we had just purchased. He was courteous, pleasant, organized, and spoke to us in a way that way educational, and he noted that while most sales were for high efficiency units, they were inappropriate for our 70 year old house built on a slab. HE went over our square footage, the location of our current heating unit, and issues regarding filter, water, and exhaust. We have yet to make a decision, but told him he was clearly in the running among our 3 (so far) estimates. No service today, only estimates and evaluation.

Ryan is patient, explains things clearly, and interacted with us as customers in a polite, courteous and appropriate way. I do suggest to Watkins that a YouTube video be prepared for customers who purchase a high efficiency system with the various approaches to working with the system. Ryan made clear to me that this type of system needs to be set and then not second-guessed. Perhaps that information had been explained to me previously, but with no experience with the system, it didn't sink in. Overall, I am very satisfied with the service call and with Ryan as a representative of Watkins.

Arrived on time and called 15 minutes prior to the appointment. One year followup systems check from the new HVAC purchased in the early fall of 2025. Friendly technician, performed thorough checks of cooling and heating systems both inside and outside the home. Answered all my numerous questions satisfactorily.

AC Check
Still having humidity values above 60%. Still wondering why the unit is not pulling enough water out of air. Fan speed maybe too high. Can’t slowing fan speed down increase efficiency to remove moisture from unit into drain?
Watkins installed our system five years ago. They’ve been wonderful to do business with ever since. Our A/C went out at 9:00pm on Thursday during the current heat wave. Called Watkins Friday morning and they had it up and running by Friday afternoon. Austin W. was our Tech.

I requested an AC tuneup as, fortunately, I’ve not had any issues. Jason B arrived well within my appt window, donned shoe covers and explained what he was going to do. He was efficient, professional, respectful, and friendly! Liked that he is comfortable with dogs even tho I kept mine out of his way. I have been very pleased with Watkins since I started using them after my previous HVAC servicer passed away. And Jason upheld that perception. I appreciate the 2 hour appointment window that gives me peace of mind that I won’t be waiting for hours although I know stuff can happen.
